Description

This chess set is inspired by sculptures that you can see on the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Art Museum of Denmark).

Here you have as each piece:
Rook – The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III is a black limestone Assyrian sculpture with many scenes in bas-relief and inscriptions. It comes from Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), in northern Iraq, and commemorates the deeds of King Shalmaneser III (reigned 858–824 BC).
Knight – Horse Head from the Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius originates from the original Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius, housed at the Capitoline Museums, Rome (Inv.MC3247).
Bishop – Portrait of Bishop Leonardo Salutati This bust is part of a monument by Mino da Fiesole, originally housed in The Cathdedral of Fiesole, dedicated to Bishop Leonardo Salutati (died 1466). Salutati was the Bishop of Fiesole, a small city on the outskirts of Florence.
Queen – Marie-Antoinette knew how to surround herself with the most talented artists of the time, such as Félix Lecomte who made her bust in Carrara marble in 1783.
King – Portrait of Marcus Aurelius as a young man, This is a bust of a young Marcus Aurelius, housed in the Capitoline Museums (Inv. Scu 279). The work is cut off under the chest and dressed in a tunic and military cloak (paludamentum).
Pawn – The identity of this figure is unknown, but from his clothing it can be suggested that it depicts a boy of royal/political descent. Created around 130-140 AD.
